german version Werkleitz Gesellschaft e.V.
Zentrum für künstlerische Bildmedien Sachsen-Anhalt

The Werkleitz Gesellschaft was founded in 1993 as a non-profit association for the support and realisation of film, art and media projects and has received institutional funding from the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs of Saxony-Anhalt since 1996.

The Centre for Art and Visual Media acts as a media office and has a media lab. It supports artists and media producers working in the field of digital media with their projects. The Werkleitz Gesellschaft also offers various grant programmes and runs regular workshops on recording, post production and digital image processing as well as on film and media art theory. From 1996 onwards, the Werkleitz Gesellschaft has been working on cinovid, an internationally unique internet-database for Experimental Film and Video Art. In 1996, the Werkleitz Biennale was established to provide an international and interdisciplinary forum for art and media. It is the biggest art festival of its kind in the new member states. It combines an art exhibition with a curated 5 days film festival and critically examines new cultural political issues. The 5th Werkleitz Biennale entitled Zugewinngemeinschaft received the award "Special exhibition 2002" from the International Art Critics Association (IACA).

In 2004, the Werkleitz Gesellschaft moved to Halle (Saale). Its premises are right next to the Volkspark, where the Werkleitz Biennale now takes place.

Apart from the Werkleitz Biennale, the Werkleitz Gesellschaft produces and organises exhibitions, workshops and festivals in cooperation with regional, national and international partners, like e.g. the Internationale Forum für elektronische Medien an der Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau ostranenie 1993-97, d-motion Festival und Konferenz für interaktive Medien 2002 und 2003, the Import-Export Symposium about culture transfer between India and the German speaking part of Europe together with the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, De-Ego and the Künstlerhaus Wien, Majlis and the National Centre for Performing Arts in Bombay 2005, as well as Moving Spirits Medienkunstausstellung 2006 together with the Franckeschen Stiftungen zu Halle.

Since 2003, the Werkleitz Gesellschaft is member of the European Coordination of Film Festivals, co-founder of the Inititative für den Film- und Fernsehnachwuchs Mitteldeutschland as well as the Initiative Gegenwart zur Situation der zeitgenössischen Kunst in Sachsen-Anhalt.
